WebP, PNG, JPG, GIF or BMP?

Each format trades file size against quality and transparency in its own way. Here's what you get from each one.

WebP
Websites and anywhere small files matter
Transparency: kept
Lossy, quality 82: the smallest files
PNG
Logos, graphics and screenshots
Transparency: kept
Lossless: every pixel kept
JPG
Photos that need to open anywhere
Transparency: filled with white
Lossy, quality 88
GIF
Simple graphics, when a site asks for GIF
Transparency: kept, without soft edges
Up to 256 colors
BMP
Older software that asks for it
Transparency: filled with white
None, so files are large

Your browser does the work whenever it can. When it can't, the image goes to our server, is converted and comes straight back.

FAQ

Image converter questions.

Is this tool free to use without an account?

Yes. You can convert images without an account or credit card, up to a daily limit. Each time you click Convert all counts as one use, however many images are in the batch. Upgrade for more.

Do my images leave my browser?

Usually not. Converting to WebP, PNG or JPG runs in your browser. Images go to our server only when your browser can't do the job: HEIC photos, formats it can't read like TIFF, GIF and BMP output, and files over 30MB. Server conversions are sent straight back, and we don't keep a copy.

Which format should I pick?

WebP for the smallest files on the web, PNG for graphics and anything with transparency, and JPG for photos that need to open anywhere. Use GIF or BMP only when a site or program asks for them.

Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. Add them like any other image and pick JPG, PNG or WebP. HEIC is very compact, so the converted file is often bigger than the original; WebP or JPG keep it smallest.

Will my images lose quality?

PNG and BMP keep every pixel. JPG (quality 88) and WebP (quality 82) are compressed, so they look nearly the same but aren't pixel-perfect. GIF is limited to 256 colors, which suits simple graphics better than photos. JPG and BMP can't be see-through, so transparent areas are filled with white.

How many images can I convert at once?

There's no fixed limit per batch. Very large batches of big images can slow your browser down, and a single image can be up to 50MB when it's converted on our server.

Do animated GIFs stay animated?

No. The converter saves one frame, so an animated GIF comes out as a still image.
